How to Make Wonton Soup
Making wonton soup is quick and easy with this recipe! Take your favorite frozen wontons or mini wontons and cook them in a quick soup broth. What’s better, you can make this recipe using one pot!
1. Bring chicken broth to a boil
Start by bringing your low-sodium chicken broth to a boil. Depending on the quantity of servings, use a medium or large pot that’s big enough for the wontons. You can use a sauce pan for a single serving of wonton soup.
2. Add Gochujang for flavor and heat
Gochujang is a thick fermented chili paste used in Korean cooking. It’s slightly sweet, but mostly savory with a kick of heat. Depending on your heat preference, you can decrease the amount of Gochujang for this wonton soup recipe.
For a medium-spicy soup broth, add one tablespoon to the chicken broth as it begins to boil. If you don’t like your wonton soup too spicy, reduce it by half. Stir in the Gochujang using a whisk. While the broth boils, finely slice a quarter of a white onion.
3. Add frozen wontons to the broth
Once the chicken broth has come to a boil, add your frozen wontons. Mini wontons are easier and will cook quicker. If you prefer, you can use regular-sized wontons and add two minutes to the cooking time.
4. Add finely sliced onions to the broth
Now, you’ll want to add your finely sliced onions. If you’re using baby bok choy, now is the time to add that to the broth, as well.
5. Cook for two minutes
That’s right, all this takes is two minutes! After adding your frozen wontons and sliced white onion to the boiling chicken broth, it’s ready to cool down. Remove the pan or pot from heat and let it sit while you dice your green onion (scallion).
6. Dice green onions
Take two or three stalks of green onion and finely dice them, beginning just above the bulb and up until the onion begins to turn dark green. You can still use the darker green portion of the scallions for garnish!
7. Serve your wonton soup
Using a slotted spoon or ladle, add the wontons to a large or shallow serving bowl. Use a ladle to pour the broth over the wontons. This is mostly for safety purposes so that you don’t pour hot soup directly into the bowl.
Add about a tablespoon of low-sodium soy sauce and gently stir. Depending on your taste, you may want a little more or less. Top with diced green scallions, and it’s ready to enjoy!
