What’s so easy about this berries and cream recipe is its versatility. Reach for this recipe to use up berries before they go bad, or freeze your berries and make the recipe from frozen berries. You can also choose whichever berries you prefer! Ideally, you’ll opt for at least two varieties of mixed berries.
What ingredients Do I need for berries and cream?
Luckily, this recipe is super simple, and so is the list of ingredients. You likely have most of these ingredients on hand and can quickly whip together this dessert. Serve berries and cream over cream biscuits, or enjoy it on its own for a gluten-free treat.
- Heavy whipping cream
- Self-rising flour
- Mixed berries
- Vanilla
- Sugar
- Cinnamon
- Mint leaves (for garnish)
Make the dessert
Start by making these two-ingredient cream biscuits. You can make them ahead of time or serve berries and cream over them, fresh out of the oven. If you’re going to serve the biscuits just after baking, you can prepare the berry compote and whipped cream while they bake.
For first-time biscuit bakers, I suggest making the biscuits ahead of time or a few hours before you plan to serve the dessert. This ensures sufficient time to follow the recipe and allows for any additional time you may need.
For seasoned biscuit makers, prepare all of your ingredients ahead of time and make the berry compote while your cream biscuits bake in the oven. You can also make the whipped cream a few hours before you’re ready to serve dessert. This will allow it to firm up in the fridge after whipping.
When to serve berries and cream
Of course, this is a dessert recipe. However, I always take advantage of an opportunity to enjoy a fruity dessert for breakfast. These are just a few occasions during which you can serve this dessert:
- Dinner party
- Summer cookout
- Family barbecue
- Date night
- Holiday brunch
- Breakfast treat
There’s really no bad time to make this berries and cream recipe. Try mixing in some fresh fruits during the summer, like peaches or plums, for a summer fruit dessert!
Absolutely! During the off-season, you can use frozen mixed berries from the store or freeze berries during the summer to use year-round.
The best cream for berries and cream is heavy whipping cream. However, you can use plant-based alternatives (like Silk’s plant-based whipping cream).
Start by baking the biscuits and allowing them to cool completely. Then, store them in an airtight container. Make the berry compote, allow to cool, and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Prepare whipped cream ahead and store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator. Then, heat up the compote in a pan over medium heat and serve with whipped cream fresh from the fridge.
